В період становлення та розвитку християнського богослов’я церква стикнулася з багатьма зовнішніми і внутрішніми концептуальними і практичними проблемами. Христини успадкували монотеїстичне розуміння Бога від юдаїзму, проте їх релігійний досвід характеризувався зустріччю і спілкуванням з Отцем, Сином і Духом. Перед християнами постали питання про природу та божественність Сина і Духа та про взаємини божественних Осіб. Шлях до класичної доктрини про Трійцю був складним і звивистим. Тринітарна доктрина сформована Афанасієм та Отцями Каппадокійцями на Сході та Августином на Заході стала богословським знаряддям розв’язання проблем вчення і практики ранньої християнської церкви.
